I have been making things since I was a child: art, music, jokes, babies. Working as an artist for most of my life, my first one woman show was in Leura in 1981. Juggling my painting with part time work, music and children I started full time art making in 2002.
Art has always been a way of life informing my view of the world, from the wonders of the natural environment to the stupidity of man.
I prefer to spend my time “in the zone”, pondering the natural world around me. Local
environments are too often ignored for the sake of so called development and destroyed rather than utilised. “Cut it down, dig it up, ship it out”. The swampy paper bark are a prime example, as well as a source of inspiration, often viewed as nasty, rank places full of bities and dangerous things rather than the rich, bio diverse filtration system that purifies our water and helps sustain us.
My work has been shown in our own gallery, Kingstudio and other community and regional galleries in the Blue Mountains, Shoalhaven and Clarence Valley. I have won a few art prizes in local arts events including the Bentley Aquisitive Prize and sold work, directly, to people from all over Australia and the world.
After developing a reaction to oils about 15 years ago, I now use mainly acrylics on canvas.
Since moving to Newbury from the Northern Rivers in January 2022 we have built and restored 2 new studio spaces. Finally able to get in and start working I've been working on landscapes from the local area. Farmland and bush paintings, these are what I'd like to show. Depending on when I can exhibit, there may be some older work.
The largest painting is 150 x 120 (Wombat Forest), some at 120 x120 and down to 30cm. The paintings will hopefully trigger a memory of place for the viewer, a place they have been or bring into focus something they may have only glanced over.
The pallet is earthy, sometimes bold but in harmony with each other, to help create a space that feels identifiable.
